Year 9 Curriculum Options 2024-26

Our vision at Wombourne High School is to develop students who are confident, independent and resilient
citizens with unlimited aspirations, who leave our school equipped to be successful in any pathway they choose.

In order to achieve our vision, we believe that all students should have access to a broad and balanced
curriculum, one that gives students the firm foundations for their future education and employment. Our
curriculum is designed to meet the needs, interests and abilities of all young people, and fosters inquisitive minds and a love of learning. A great curriculum is one that inspires students to want to know more now and that gives them skills to be able to learn independently throughout their lives.

Our curriculum is designed to ensure our students leave us as confident, articulate young adults ready to enter the best universities, the most prestigious apprenticeships, or the world of work.

The core curriculum that all students study at Wombourne High School includes:

  • English Language

  • English Literature

  • Mathematics

  • Double Science (termed Trilogy Science as incorporatingBiology, Chemistry and Physics)

  • Humanities(History or Geography)

  • A Modern Foreign Language (French or Spanish for the majority of students)

As part of the Year 9 options process, in addition to the qualifications listed above, students are able to choose
from a range of optional subjects to create a personalised curriculum in Years 10 and 11. This is a great
opportunity for students to focus on subjects they excel in, subjects they want to know more about, and subjects
which might be beneficial for their future studies or careers. This webpage contains information about each of the different courses on offer to students and is accompanied by a video which has been produced by each department which can be viewed on the school website.

The key criteria students should consider when choosing a subject is that they enjoy it and want to achieve well in it. The more students love the subjects they take, the more work they will put into it, and the better they will achieve. It is however, important to also consider future career options. For example, if a student wanted to take A Level Biology or study Medicine at University in the future, studying GCSE Triple Science would give them a significant advantage.

When students are choosing which subjects they wish to study, it is also important that they understand how
each qualification is structured and assessed. Vocational courses for example include significant coursework
portfolios whereas most GCSE courses are assessed purely by terminal examinations which are undertaken at the end of Year 11.

To supplement their formal qualifications, all students will study PE, RE, PSHE and careers related learning.
