Wombourne High School welcomes Ofsted recognition of progress, leadership and ambitious vision

Wombourne High School, part of Invictus Education Trust has welcomed the findings of its latest Ofsted inspection, which recognises the meaningful progress being made across the school and highlights significant strengths in leadership, personal development, sixth-form provision and safeguarding.

Following the inspection on 19 May 2026, Ofsted found that safeguarding standards are met, while leadership and governance, personal development and wellbeing, and post-16 provision all meet the expected standard.

The report recognises the journey the school has been on following a period of significant change. Inspectors praised leaders for remaining firmly focused on pupils and maintaining an ambitious vision for the school.

Ofsted said:

“Leaders have navigated steadfastly through these difficult times, maintaining a clear focus on the best interests of pupils.”

Inspectors added that leaders have emerged from this period with “renewed clarity and purpose”, have “accelerated the pace of improvement” and that “meaningful progress has been made in many areas.”

The report identifies improvements in the curriculum, the school’s enhanced curriculum and personal development offer, sixth-form provision and the consistency of learning routines, noting that these developments are “having a positive impact for pupils.”

A school community with much to celebrate

Ofsted found that governance is effective, with trustees and governors providing appropriate support and challenge. Inspectors also praised the school’s approach to professional development, reporting that staff “feel supported and valued” and remain ambitious for the school and its pupils.

Personal development was another positive feature of the inspection. The report recognises the school’s comprehensive programme, including carefully planned PSHE, pastoral support and opportunities that prepare pupils for life beyond school.

In particular, inspectors highlighted Wombourne High School’s weekly Enhanced Curriculum as “a strength of the school and a rich addition to life at Wombourne High School.” The broad programme includes opportunities such as media club, swimming, robotics and cultural art, helping pupils develop their interests and talents while building relationships and strengthening the school community.

Sixth form praised by inspectors

The school is particularly pleased that its sixth form was judged to meet the expected standard.

Inspectors described it as “a valued and important part of the school” and said students were “unequivocally positive about their sixth form.” The report recognises a broad and growing range of qualifications, effective teaching and strong preparation for students’ next steps.

Sixth-form students were also praised for the positive contribution they make to the wider school, including mentoring younger pupils and taking leadership roles in school and community events. Inspectors found that students typically achieve well from their starting points and act as positive role models for younger pupils.

Pupils feel safe, supported and ready to learn

Safeguarding standards were met, with Ofsted recognising an open culture where safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility and concerns are actively identified and addressed. Inspectors concluded that, as a result, pupils “are made safer and feel safe.”

The report also notes that most pupils enjoy their time at Wombourne High School and are welcomed each day by staff who care about them and want them to succeed. Pupils told inspectors that they feel safe and have an adult they can speak to if they have concerns. Lessons are typically calm and purposeful, with most pupils described as kind and respectful towards staff, visitors and one another.

Continuing our improvement journey

The inspection also identifies areas where further work is required, including improving consistency in teaching, achievement, attendance and provision for vulnerable pupils.

The school recognises these priorities and is already taking action. Importantly, Ofsted acknowledges that leaders have strengthened systems for identifying pupils’ individual needs, provided additional staff training and introduced further quality assurance. Inspectors noted that “the picture is improving” and that these changes reflect leaders’ “ambition and high expectations” for pupils.

The report also recognises that leaders’ work on the curriculum has been effective, resulting in “an ambitious curriculum for all pupils”, supported by staff with the subject knowledge and expertise needed to teach it.

Wombourne High School welcomes the report as an important recognition of the progress already made while remaining focused on the work still ahead. The school will continue working closely with pupils, parents, staff, governors and the wider community to build on these foundations and ensure every pupil has the opportunity to thrive.
