Curriculum at Wombourne High School

The aim of the curriculum at Wombourne High School is to inspire students, to allow individual students to identify their interests and talents, and to develop these.  To develop real interest and passions.  To strive for excellence in all its forms, including attainment of qualifications.  Through our key values of hard work, positivity and kindness our aim is to develop a ‘can do’ attitude in all of our students, valuing resilience and determination.   Our aim is that students enjoy learning.

In addition to learning within the classroom, to spark interest and passion, we aim to provide students with unique educational experiences through trips, speakers and extra-curriculum activities.  To give a flavor, triple award Scientists and 6th form students were able to hear Robert Winston talk about his work in Spring 2019, 23 Ancient History students visited Rome in February 2019, Dance students have worked with the Royal Ballet and Performing Arts students are able to visit local theatres at least twice a year and perform Shakespeare each year in a Birmingham theatre (Macbeth at the Old Vic in November 2019).

In 2019 – 2020 there is a whole school focus on increasing careers education through subject areas.  Each subject will deliver at least 2 career focused subject lessons per year group per year.

In 2019 – 2020 the school timetable changed from a two-week timetable to a one-week timetable, this provided an opportunity to review the curriculum and make minor changes.

Years 10 and 11

At Key Stage 4 most students study 9 GCSE or equivalent qualifications.  The curriculum is highly academic with the EBacc at its core, with the offer of Triple Science, Computer Science and Ancient History, to cater for the needs of the majority of our academically able students, in some years the cohort is 50% Prior Ability Higher.  However, we are a comprehensive school and aim to meet the needs of all ability levels, therefore the vocational is also highly valued, and for most students a mix of subjects is healthy.

At Key Stage 4 students’ study:

  • Maths
  • English Literature and English Language
  • Science (Trilogy or Separate Sciences)
  • A Humanities subject (Geography, History or Ancient History)
  • A Language option (French, Spanish, or a vocational choice for some students)
  • 2 Option subjects

In the past students have chosen their Humanities option in Year 8 to allow time for a foundation year in Ancient History.  From 2020, the Humanities option will be taken at the same time as the main option process in Year 9.  However, the Key Stage 3 curriculum in Humanities is being remodelled to ensure students have the right foundations to choose either History, Ancient History or Geography at Key Stage 4.
